Frog Fun: Exploring the Senses

This week we continue our study of the five senses by focusing on the related senses of smell and taste! Science Sarah took some children out to Toad Mountain today where she had prepared three trails using scented cotton balls. The scents were lemon, peppermint, and almond. The children had no way of telling which trail to follow by sight or sound, since all trails looked alike. They had to rely on their sense of smell to find their way.

They pretended to be ants from different ant colonies, and their queens each had a different favorite food. They had to follow the right scent to the end of the trail to find the food for the queen. The trails crossed at one point, so they had to smell carefully to make sure they were still on the right path. They thoroughly enjoyed it!

In Ms. Saba’s group this morning the children learned about how different smells and tastes can come together to make a new and tasty combination, by making fresh salsa! They cut up cherry tomatoes straight from the garden, cilantro, onion, and green pepper. They smelled them, tasted them, and combined them! They ate it in the afternoon for snack. Yum!
